Palatal Expanders

What is a Palate Expander?

A palate expander is an orthodontic appliance used to widen the upper jaw (also called the maxilla) to correct certain dental and skeletal issues. This treatment is most effective in children and pre-teens while their jaw is still growing.

Why is Palate Expansion Needed?

Sometimes, the upper jaw is too narrow to fit properly with the lower jaw, causing issues like:

  • Crossbite (when upper teeth fit inside the lower teeth)

  • Crowding (not enough space for permanent teeth)

  • Impacted teeth (teeth blocked from erupting)

  • Breathing difficulties due to a narrow palate

By gently widening the upper jaw over time, a palate expander creates more space for teeth to align properly and improves the bite and facial balance.

How Does It Work?

The expander is custom-made and fits snugly against the upper molars. A small screw in the center is turned periodically using a special key, which gradually separates the mid-palatal suture and widens the jaw. Treatment usually lasts a few months, followed by a retention period to allow new bone to form and stabilize the expansion.

What to Expect

  • Initial Sensation: A slight pressure in the teeth or roof of the mouth for a few minutes after turning the key.

  • Speech and Eating: May feel different at first but improves quickly with practice.

  • Gap Between Front Teeth: A normal and temporary sign that the expander is working!

Our team provides full instructions and support to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Is a Palate Expander Right for Your Child?

Every smile is unique. If your child has bite issues, crowding, or difficulty breathing through their nose, early orthodontic evaluation can determine if a palate expander is the right solution. Early treatment can prevent more complex issues down the road.
